Days 6 to 9 Durham and Chatton

Durham and Chatton days 6 to 9


When:  Days 6 to 9, 27 to 30 July

Where:  Durham and Chatton (just south and just north of Newcastle)

Weather:  Mostly overcast, just a bit of spitting, quite warm, about 20 to 22C

What:  touring and walking, seeing old friends and new.

Who:  Stephen, Caroline, Richard, Harry, Rowan.  Sorry Martin, next time.  We also hope to someday meet Craig and his father.

Workout: getting rather lazy

Walking: Lovely long walk around Durham, stopping over for a nice lunch at a pub.

And the actual location of Uhtred’s castle:  Brabbenburg!

Wine:  Sticking with mostly Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec

Whine:  a bird shat on Brent's leg.  A bit of justified whingeing I suppose.  Missing ‘Bat out of Hell’.  Bloody Covid took us down.  We haven’t been very ill at all, but felt it better not to spread it through a theatre.  

Whisky:  still none, but getting closer to Scotland!

Wtf: Why are the churchbells ringing all day and night?  Shane, any suggestions?

Wild: driving on the left for the first time since 2013 in Australia.  Roads are narrower here.

Also a walk through Holy Island.  Only accessible at low tide. (thanks Romeo for the suggestion). 

Wonderful: Meeting up with Stephen again and walking through the beautiful city of Durham.  Seeing and staying with Caroline and Richard and getting a taste of life in a northern town and enjoying their hospitality and pub culture.

Day 10 to 12 St Andrews, Scotland

Day 10 to 12 St. Andrews Scotland  When:  July 30 to August 1 Where:  St. Andrews Scotland Weather:  Generally nice and sunny.  A bit cool and cloudy Sunday morning, but nice in the afternoon What:  Just mostly relaxing.  Trying to understand why golf is so terribly exciting to so many. Who:  Just us and some very nice staff. Workout: Restarted working out in the hotel gym.  Very well equipped. Walking: Around the golf course mostly. Wine:  Shiraz is popular.  New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc still rules Whine:  Narrow roads!  Whisky:  Just this bit of tackiness Wtf: dodging golf balls while walking the golf course!  And the roundabouts!  They’re everywhere.  I’ve mastered the first and second exits.  The third?  Not so well.  The GPS has had to recalculate quite a few times.  Good thing we’re not in any big rush. Days 27 to 30 Wales and Windsor

Days 27 to 30 Wales and Windsor  When:  17 to 20 August Where:  Small town in Northern Wales and Windsor Weather:  All over the place.  Wales was drizzly.  Windsor was an absolute deluge of rain (that I drove through) and then hot, and then variable with rain, sun, rain, and about 23C What:  Mostly just touring around.  Seeing the sites of North Wales and Southern England. Who:  Just us Workout: At the hotel. Very nice little gym, but the ladies doing power aerobics to rap music was just a bit much. Walking: 9.67, 4.38, 14.15, 3.63 km Wine:  Still mostly NZ Sauvignon Blanc.  But 7 new types from all over at our pairing dinner. We also went to a very nice winery in Kent and got some bubbles.  Whine:  Our time in UK is coming to an end.
