Day 10 to 12 St Andrews, Scotland
Day 10 to 12 St. Andrews Scotland
When: July 30 to August 1
Where: St. Andrews Scotland
Weather: Generally nice and sunny. A bit cool and cloudy Sunday morning, but nice in the afternoon
What: Just mostly relaxing. Trying to understand why golf is so terribly exciting to so many.
Who: Just us and some very nice staff.
Workout: Restarted working out in the hotel gym. Very well equipped.
Walking: Around the golf course mostly.
Wine: Shiraz is popular. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc still rules
Whine: Narrow roads!
Whisky: Just this bit of tackiness
Wtf: dodging golf balls while walking the golf course! And the roundabouts! They’re everywhere. I’ve mastered the first and second exits. The third? Not so well. The GPS has had to recalculate quite a few times. Good thing we’re not in any big rush.
I have always found Waze to be the best GPS for Vancouver. It takes me around traffic very well. However, here it took us down some windy little roads past farmhouses and even what seemed to be cattle trails. And then it lost signal and we had no map at all. WTF Waze! I de-installed it. Here’s some of the mud it took us through:
Wild: The wind and landscape. Scotland is truly a different landscape than England. The natural border is very noticeable.
Wildlife: Flies! Fruit flies in our wine and house flies everywhere. Almost like Australia! And a couple of wee birds:
Water: The North Sea. Brent got in to his ankles. Said it felt like glass cutting his skin. Much like Wreck. This is the town of Elie (pronounced eel-ee, not eel-eye like the town in Manitoba).
Wonderful: Oliver and Eve, the servers at the bar at the hotel, knew all about the Vancouver Whitecaps. Charming young people. And our server at breakfast, Sean, who also seemed to know all about the Whitecaps as well as the Canucks. There seems to be a pattern here. And finally, all the wonderful Scottish accents. So far, no problem understanding them.
